“The Application of the Latest Technology of a Venture Company to Micromachining of Medical Tubes”

It is necessary to remove blood and/or gas from the chest cavity after an operation of heart or lungs. For this purpose, chest tubes made of vinyl or silicon are inserted into the chest cavity and are connected to a fluid collection canister under negative pressure. The negative pressure is maintained at or below 20 cm water column. It has long been believed that high vacuum will cause suction injury to soft tissues such as the heart or lungs, and this method has hardly been changed for the past fifty years.

Dr. Wakabayashi, a world leading chest surgeon residing in the United Sates, has recently discovered that high vacuum itself does not cause soft tissue injury unless it generates an excessive suction force. (Wakabayashi A. & Roohk, V. High vacuum drainage of the chest using a miniature double lumen chest tube. ASAIO J 2003: 49:300-3). Based on this finding, he invented special drainage tubes, the Wakabayashi Tubes. His tubes are designed to be safe even at 40 times-higher vacuum. The key element of the Wakabayashi tubes is multiple small round side holes. To drill several hundreds of small round holes of 1 mm diameter in a soft flexible polymer tube of 4 mm in diameter is an extremely difficult task. He tested several American companies but none of them was satisfactory. He found that one of them could do the job to his satisfaction but the process took 7 minutes per tube which is impractical for a mass production.

Dr. Wakabayashi contacted Market Partner Japan about three years and ten months ago to find a company which could do it, and we introduced a venture company in Okayama Prefecture to him out of our group. This company used to specialize in the shape processing of metals, but it has developed high precision boring technology suitable for a mass production. After several failures, they perfected the technique and provided hundreds of Wakabayashi tubes to him. By using the tubes processed by them, Dr. Wakabayashi was able to conduct clinical studies in US. The study is still in progress but the preliminary result is excellent. They were able to demonstrate the high vacuum chest drainage by the Wakabayashi tubes is significantly superior to the conventional low vacuum drainage. Dr. Wakabayashi and his group are rewriting a page in the medical history in regards to the chest drainage system. Upon completion of their clinical study, they will present the result to the surgical society and expect to let many surgeons in the world to switch to their high vacuum technique.

Although outside help is necessary accordingly, obviously any top-ranking trading companies will take no notice of such help wanted by small and medium enterprises unless there is a good prospect that their products will find a great sale to yield a great profit in the future despite the present state. Since it is very inefficient to sell a small quantity of products in limited markets for small and medium enterprises, top-ranking trading companies nowadays, attaching great importance to efficiency, may not likely to render their full support with their all strength in such case, even if persons in charge would make efforts with warm enthusiasm.

It may be that you could employ experts with experience in international business and leave market development in the hands of such experts. While the world is wide, however, it is necessary but not so easy to find out such experts who not only have resided in foreign countries to work for trading companies or large enterprises but also are familiar with your industry and are proficient in English and other languages. Also, even if you could find out such experts, it might be difficult to make them last long with you because of their treatment such salaries and due to difference in corporate culture.

Even if you have managed to set about promoting your products in a foreign market after acquiring a capable person and organizing a local subsidiary, it may be that you should expect that it will take about ten years to make your operation stable in the real sense to continue realizing a profit. It might be better for you to be ready to be worried about the deficit for about three years after the organization of your subsidiary. Reportedly, many companies have suffered misery from withdrawing from overseas markets because miscalculation of personnel and difficulty in fund raising. A decision whether to withdraw from an overseas market or remain there is quite different from just closing a domestic branch office or outlet and could be so great a shock as to shook the underpinnings of the Japanese head office and drive the company to the brink of bankruptcy.

After struggling against such shock, however, there may be a chance that you will make so great a profit to your delight on a wave of prosperity. Thus, you may feel as if such good times will continue so long that you will come to take your place among the top-ranking companies very soon. Also. you may feel as if everything is going well after taking all measures available such as expansion of sales networks, settlement of a manufacturing base, and mergers and acquisitions However, a recession that has never been imagined will often take place after all such measures have been finished. Under such circumstances, the expansion strategy adopted in the past will be repented in view of a large quantity of dead stock and a large amount of bad debt. Thus, at this point, there will be a worry over whether the Japanese head office will actually manage to survive.

Even in such circumstances, if the company is financially healthy and has a surplus fund in abundance, it may be able to survive and build up a stable profitable system It can be said from experience that it will take about 10 years for an overseas operation to reach a stable situation after experiencing ups and downs including some life-and-death crises. During such a period of ups and downs, such company will lose capable persons and will become unable to advance into a new field of business with a result that it gets behind its competitors.
